Guest Blogger & Arborist Katy on the Spiritual Side of Trees

Guest Blogger Katy Krokower on a few reasons to appreciate trees…oh to have a chance to climb a tall, tall tree and find some peace there:

So, I missed the boat blogging about trees on Climate Change Day but hey, there’s really no time like the present to remind you what they are doing for you as you go about your busy day: Retaining water, converting carbon dioxide, lowering your heating and cooling bills – all this and more, while you’re busy sucking up your morning coffee!

Lately, more important to me has been the “spiritual” part of my profession: enjoying the deeper benefits of trees. I climb recreationally and lately because of some personal upheavals find myself climbing up (only) 20 feet or so and just resting my cheek against the bark. Or sitting at the base and letting the tree help me rest. Lest you think this sounds hooey, you might get respite sitting under a shady tree in park cooling your jets while talking on the phone. Those are just my country trees’ urban cousins, offering you different services, just maybe a little more aloof about it.

The next time you have a quiet moment, consider this quote from Hermann Hesse. It might not make sense, you might have to read it over and over. All I know is that it speaks to me and has taken me out to my trees when I need some introspection or perspective.

When we are stricken and cannot bear our lives any longer, then a tree has something to say to us: Be still! Be still! Look at me! Life is not easy, life is not difficult. (Wandering)

I encourage you to look up every once in awhile and appreciate those trees. Even while they are keeping you up at night in the howling wind. We just wouldn’t be here without them. – Katy

It does not sound hooey to me! Climbing a tree and resting a cheek on bark sounds delightful. May you do it often in 2010 :)
